Here’s news on the old @couriernews building in downtown #Elgin: It should be re-occupied by summer’s end: http://ht.ly/5tW6u #SunTimesMedia

WEST DUNDEE — Jessica Snype, 18, of Bartlett, was extolling the virtues of community service when Chelsey Satterlee of Elgin interrupted, whacking her borrowed spade into the dirt. “Ooh, that is the biggest spider!” said Satterlee, also 18. There were more shrieks as a boy pulled a snake from the spot where the group of recent high school graduates was digging up non-native plants Tuesday at Schweitzer Woods here. The graduates, who came from across the country with Minneapolis-based Students Today Leaders Forever, are the latest group of volunteers to help turn the 160-acre property into an environmental education center for Community Unit School District 300 and the Kane County community. “We’ve had church groups and Boy Scouts and groups like that, but we’ve also had a dedicated group of 30 or 40 people who are out here all the time,” said Geoffrey Petzel, executive director of Friends of the Fox River, one of the groups leasing the Schweitzer property from the Kane County Forest Preserve District. The student group “actually called me yesterday and said, ‘We need a project. Do you have anything for us to do?’ We always have stuff to do. We’re happy to have help.” For the rest of the story, visit The Courier-News.
